Kuklick, a University of Pennsylvania American history professor, studies three groups of thinkers (the RAND Corporation; Harvard political scientist Richard Neustadt and Ernest May's "May Group"; and academics who became presidential advisors, including George Kennan, McGeorge Bundy and Henry Kissinger) to understand intellectuals' "thinking about war" and how their ivory-tower-nurtured philosophies meshed with "political reality." Kuklick's deconstruction of the doctrines of massive retaliation, flexible response and gradual escalation will ring familiar to students of the cold war, and he underlines rather than upends the traditional consensus on "philosophers in government." (Kennan is the "first intellectual middleman of the postwar national security studies," and Kissinger is "supremely gifted in translating ideas into politics.") But it is RAND, an Air Force-created think tank, and the reactions to its blend of "mathematical-economic" reasoning, organizational theorizing and "rational choice" decision making that dominate the volume. I bought this book for my 9-year-old granddaughter, a 4th grade student, because she has been fascinated with Anne Frank since reading THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. I went by the product review, which said this book was for 9 - 12 year olds, and from a 4th grade level. I guess I should have paid attention to the Editorial Reviews. The School Library Journal suggests 5th grade level and up, and Booklist says grades 6 - 12. Unfortunately I did not go back and look at these reviews until I had the book and realized it is more detailed and involved than my granddaughter would interested in. I don't even think she would understand a lot of the historical background.For those who read this book, it may well be worth 5 stars. However I am giving it only 4 stars because of the product misguidance. Amazon, fortunately, had no problem with accepting the book's return.

The story of Anne Frank and her famous diary in presented in the context of world events. There are many photographs, as well as quotations from the diary, from people who knew Anne and her family, and from historians. Starting with pictures of the actual diary, the narrative starts with the Frank family's life in Germany, their move to the Netherlands, their decision to hide, and their life in the secret annex. After the occupants are discovered, they are deported from Amsterdam. The book discusses what happened to the occupants, as well as how the diary was first published and later made available in many languages and formats. There is a detailed glossary in the back.The value of this book is the photographs and first person accounts. Although the narrative is informative, the level of detail can be distracting, and there are several places where the translation is not smooth. But the pictures of Anne, her actual writing and diary, and the annex are so powerful and instrumental in bringing her life into context that this book is very highly recommended for all libraries, particularly those with Holocaust collections. - KATHE PINCHUCK - CLIFTON, NJ

this book is an awesome addition to any library, WW2, or Anne Frank collection! For anyone who has read her diary, it will make it come even more alive. this book is filled with glossy, colorful pictures and the prose is wonderful as well, telling Anne's story and some things you might not know. There's pictures of her growing up, the secret annex, and other Holocoust info and pictures. This is jsut a really great collector's book and you will treasure it for years to come. It's also a great size, and the cover is beautiful and glossy. I love this book, and whether you know Anne well and want to learn more, I highly reccomend adding this to your list!Happy reading!

Although it breaks my heart to see the photos and read the personal thoughts of Anne, I know it is a good reminder to make sure this kind of hatred for no cause never happens again. I feel like my own government is turning on Christians in our country. I'm getting a small since of how Jews must have felt at the very beginning of the intolerance that the Nazi government slowly forced on them.

Bought this for my 12 year old daughter who's very interested in Anne Frank. She loved it!!! Had lots of pictures of Anne, her family and the secret annex that she'd never seen before. Worth every cent!!!

Everything about this book was great. Tons of family photos and information. Also a lot of excerpt's from Anne's diary and photos of her actual writing. Must have for any fan of Anne Frank.

I regretted finishing the book, and at the same time, I am already planning to read it a second time very soon. It's amazing the power of a book can have on a life and I am not talking about this one. Somewhere some nameless bureaucrat decided that the citizens of a Korean island, Jeju, needed copies of the book, Heidi, set in the Swiss Alps. Copies were distributed and for some reason the citizens fell in love with it. They sat around and read it as families and discussed it at work. It made a difference in people's lives. I just loved that story.I have always admired Lisa See's books but I struggled with this one on several different levels. Yes, It was interesting story and I learned quite a bit but the violence in it was a real problem for me. At about 60% through I almost set it aside as it was so graphic. Yet I kept on and, in the end, I am glad I did.It is the story of a matriarchal society where the women work as haenyeo divers. They dive in the ocean and harvest the sea's treasures including abalone and octopus. They have amazing body chemistry to withstand the cold and the hardship. The men stay home and tend the children and make light meals. Of course, it is not as good as it seems. Property is still in the man's name. They often take the women's wages and gamble and drink it away. As their daughters grow up they take over the child raising and food preparation and the men are left with nothing to do. As the women trudge home from a long day of sea harvesting, they come home and clean and cook and mind children. It's not as idyllic as it seems.Because of Jeju's location, it has a long history of occupation first by the Japanese then the Americans. Both are cruel and there is massacre after massacre. Villages are burned and large burial grounds appear. Life is a constant struggle and they soon learn not to say anything because of all the informants to all the different competing military factions.The story is told around two best friends's lives, Mi-ja and Young-sook. They grew up together and became divers and then their paths diverged after marriage and their struggles will break your heart. While I suspect most will be moved Young-sook, it is Mi-ja's story that grabbed my heart.An interesting book that gave a glimpse into another way of life that I had no idea about before reading it.

Lisa See has set her latest novel primarily on the Korean island of Jeju, and tells the story of Young-sook and Mi-ja. The two girls are best friends and the book opens with them becoming baby-divers, the first step in the coming-of-age process for joining the matriarchal society of women divers of Jeju. Young-sook is the daughter of the divers’ leader while Mi-ja is tainted because she is the daughter of collaborator with the occupying Japanese forces.See has again written about friendships. This story is well-written and her descriptions of every-day life are detailed without bogging down the story the way so many other historical authors do. The story is surprisingly fast paced and there are enough surprises to keep the reader reading into the wee hours of the morning.See’s characters are well-developed and likable. The friendship of the two main characters is believable and the reader will find herself hoping the two friends can survive the twists and turns of their lives.For fans of Lisa See, this will be a welcomed addition to their collection of See books. To the reader who hasn’t read See yet, this is a good starting point because this book has it all – history of a little known society, strong women characters, friendship, excellent writing, and a well-told story.
