This book had a serious tone problem. It was marketed as a children's scifi, so I anticipated a cute story about a young boy having to come of age alone. Sometimes, it was this. Other times, it was gory and made my skin crawl at how messed up some of the content was. He honestly could have gone the route of Stephen King's IT and written a book for adults that contained a child protagonist, but instead, he chose to write a story about a child going through some severe trauma that just might traumatize the children reading it.I also want to mention that it's really unclear when this takes place. It's scifi, so I imagined future, but it must be an alternate reality because he talked about how his parents were really into things like the Simpsons (as evidenced by his father naming moons of a far off planet "Itchy" and "Scratchy"). Spongebob is also mentioned which implies his parents are either Gen X or Millenials which I found really jarring due to the lack of acknowledgement of why the things mentioned far into the future are things we know about in our current time line. Space travel is so advanced but the media is all still the same? It makes zero sense, and it really took me out of the story.Another thing that bugged me was how there were times when the character's word choices were clearly those of a man upwards of forty despite his being thirteen. Sometimes he did a good job of giving him a kid's voice and other times he did a terrible job. There was little to no consistency. Though the narrator did a good job of sounding youthful, and he spoke clearly, he always had a sense of urgency to his voice even when discussing the mundane. It led me to grow desensitized to anything that was happening, and during moments of tension, I felt none. He did do a decent job of having different voices for different characters, but it was odd how a ten year old boy from the main character's past ended up sounding like a grizzled thirty-something year old.Despite all of this, I really did enjoy the ending. I enjoyed the planet, and I enjoyed reading about the creatures that lived on it. I hadn't guessed the "twist" by the end, and I thought it ended on a really cool, hopeful note that almost made me want more had I not disliked everything else so much.

I got this book because it was a part of the amazon originals that I get for free with my membership. I thought it was an intriguing concept and I loved Hatchet growing up (what they compared it to). The real tragedy here was that it had so much promise during the first 1/2 of the book. Some of the imaging and descriptions were great, but there was a twist toward the end that made you go HUH!? It felt like the author didn't know how to finish the book or didn't want it to go past a certain page limit so they changed up the plot. If it really was the original plot that the author was going for then they missed the mark completely with their execution. The narration was very poor as well, he mispronounced too many words. Overall, you should spend your money else where and do not waste a credit on this book.

This was a great father and son book. I listened to it with my ten-year-old son. We both enjoy Scifi, with other favorites being the Martian and the Tin Star series. My son now says that this is his favorite book.I would not recommend it for younger than 9 or 10 years old as there are some gory and scary parts, but they are not too bad or overly descriptive. I was not a huge fan of the narrator, he wasn't bad but his tone just seemed a little off.

Sci-fi is not my typical genre. I chose this book because 1) the details reminded me of a book I read with my son for school - Hatchet by Gary Paulson and 2) it came as one of my free audible originals. I am SO VERY GLAD I chose this story. I found myself not wanting to turn my car off at the end of my twice daily hour long commute. I could easily visualize the story as the narrator read. The descriptions and experiences of Micah kept me rooting for him the whole time. As a mom of boys his age, I could feel my mommy instincts kick in as I watched this boy grow and learn from his experiences. I was so proud of how mature he became and of his final choice . . . .Great story!!

its was a pretty good book, not great but I got it for free so it was worth a listen.

As this book is a collection of previous works, the presentation is objective, which I deem necessary. I would recommend it to anyone looking to read the classics. I used it for a research paper on Anselm's Cur Deus Homo. I am now contemplating buying the rest of this series simply for fulfilling my desire to read all this series contains. The series itself is a marvelous collection of works that every serious reader of Christianity should own. Therefore, if you do not already own them all, purchase this series immediately and set to studying it. It can only help you, your church, and all who come in contact with you or your church.

A very thought provoking book. The writings of Anselm especially moved me as he argued the case for God and how He is alive working in this world. A true treat as you look into the minds of early Christians scholars in the 12th and 13th century.

I was skeptical of this material when I first purchased it, figuring it was merely a selection of raw material taken from various church fathers. What I discovered was a focused and well-commented set of materials designed to provide the reader with a source-based picture into the development of early church ecclesiology. The author selects 4 Latin writers (Tertullian, Cyprian, Ambrose, and Jerome) and provides a brief biography of each. Then chooses a set of source materials that highlight their conception of church government. Prior to each material, the author thoroughly describes the historical occasion which precipitates the source document. In all, the reader is left with a good impression of the ecclesiology of each of these foundational theologians.

This anthology was originally compiled by Eugene Fairweather in the 1950s. It is an excellent compilation of many of the most important primary-source documents from the theologians and philosophers of the middle ages. Anselm's writings are emphasized, with about 150 pages of the anthology devoted to his thought. Some of the others who are also given space (although less than devoted to Anselm) are: Eadmer, Ivo of Chartres, Gratian, Abelard, Hugh of St. Victor, Richard of St. Victor, Peter Lombard, Stephen Langton, Bonaventure, Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham. What about Aquinas? I was initially puzzled at the apparent lack of coverage for this most important figure of the middle ages. Thankfully, I discovered that his writings are collected in Volume XI of the Library of Christian Classics series. Other than this, the collection found in Volume X does a great job of bringing together the most important writings from Western Christendom in the period of 1000-1400 AD.

So, someone looking for a collection of all the essential writings of the Middle Ages will also want to purchase Volume XI of this series (The Library of Christian Classics). Otherwise, the collection is one of the best at bringing under one cover the most important writings from approximately 1000-1400 AD in Western Europe.
