This thing is gargantuan. It is a whopping 1653 pages of high quality Windows Server R2 information. If this book doesn't contain the information you need about Windows Server 2008 R2, then you probably won't find it anywhere.I am not a server guy. I don't want to be a server guy, nothing against server guys, but I just think it is a full time job and it is not possible for me to keep up with my .NET Software Architecture skills, and also be an effective server administrator.Of course I have to be familiar enough with them to architect scalable, secure, high performing software, so I chose this book as my learning resource. It is a great resource. I have not gone too it and come away disappoint yet.The book is broken down into 11 parts:Part I- Windows Server 2008 R2 OverviewPart II- Windows Server 2008 R2 Active DirectoryPart III- Networking ServicesPart IV- SecurityPart V- Migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2Part VI- Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration and ManagementPart VII- Remote and Mobile TechnologiesPart VIII- Desktop AdministrationPart IX- Fault-Tolerance TechnologiesPart X- Optimizing, Tuning, Debugging, and Problem SolvingPart XI- Integrated Windows Application ServicesAlmost every chapter begins with a section that covers the history of the topic, or gives an overview of the topic, included the vocabulary of the topic at hand.The authors writing style makes it an easy to read book, or at least as easy as server reading can get.This book is not like some I have seen that are written by several authors, they usually seem to be very disconnected and you can tell when one author stops and another starts. This book flows nicely from chapter to chapter.If you are in anyway involved with Windows Server 2008 R2, you owe it to yourself to get this book. It will not leave my side!!!!

I purchased this book for a Server 2008 R2 Ent setup. For the most part it was a set-by-step guide on how to setup the server.The book does a very good job about showing the steps on how to setup DNS and VPN and also go's into details on what the options mean that your clicking, however if you don't want to know about what it means that's no problem you can just read just the steps and click what it tells you and things just work.In my opinion the book lacks on What you can do with AD after initial setup. If your looking for help with AD past install this isn't for you. The book simply tells how to setup a forest and DC, then leaves you hanging. There isn't really much AD information past setup. User account creation isn't explained well and seems like the author just simply assumed everyone knows everything about AD past setup.There is a lot of information on IPv4 and IPv6, I was able to setup the server for both. Seeing that IPv6 will soon be used more since IPv4 addresses are running out this book would be a good option for IPv6 setup. however if you are looking for Ipv6 only, I would use this book as an alternative and find a book only on Ipv6.overall this book had all he information needed to setup Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition. It was well worth the money as I had the Server up and running in 2 days with standard user interruptions. Figure it will take you around 12-16 hours for full setup.

As usual we are always expected to know the new stuff and support it but no one wants to ever pay for training so what to do? I did a lot of scouring for a good server 08R2 book and it was slim pickings. Most books were out of date (R1) or simply geared toward studying for a test which does me little good in defining an AD upgrade road map and figuring out what to define for app server standards. I finally found this on amazon and relying on reviews and the TOC i opted to get it. Its a fantastic resource but huge so expect to be doing some serious reading. What I loved is that right off they talk about what is new in R2. This is a big help. Lets get features out of the way immediately. The rest of the book is structured logically but is easy to jump around in since life does not follow a table of contents. I strongly recommed this if you support windows servers in a real world environment. If you are looking to take an MCSE test, then stick to the exam cram for those since this will be way over kill for you more than likely. A+ to the authors.

I don't know much about the Domain side of operating systems, but this book taught me enough to be able to set up a redundant pair of domain controllers on a single domain. Not complicated, but I think I now understand enough to keep it going. This book gets way too in depth for my purpose, but it's good to have the info there.

Got it to help me study for the 70-643 since MS added the R2 content to the exams. So far it is the most complete of the 2 Server 2008 R2 books I have. I also purchased the Mastering Server 2008 R2 book and from what I've read in both books Unleashed is the better of the 2 with the exception of the chapter(s) on Remote Desktop Services in which the Mastering book explains a few things better.

I actually ordered the wrong book...however it still very informative

This book is massive and full of everything you could possibly want to know about Windows Server 2008 R2. The only problem is that the index is completely useless! Let's say you have a problem with Internet Explorer configuration. "Internet Explorer" in NOT in the index. Or something more common: You are trying to configure a switch via a serial connection. First off, this is a bit tricky because this OS has no means of accessing the serial ports. Yep! Hyperterminal is not part of Windows Server 2008 R2. So the writers of this book also ignored it. No mention in the index of Com ports, Hyperterminal, or Serial ports. You have to look online to discover that Hyperterminal is gone and that you can copy Hypertrm.exe and hypertrm.dll from XP to Program Files\Windows NT and it will work. For this sort of useful information to be missing from a book that is 2-1/4 inches thick is unfathomable. I'd love to use it but I can't find anything in it.

Cathy Whitlock is an interior designer, journalist, and the author ofRe-de-sign. She is a contributing writer for Traditional Home and The Huffington Post and her design, film, lifestyle, and celebrity profiles have appeared in American Airlines Celebrated Living, Architectural Digest, Glamour (UK), and Veranda magazine, among others. The Art Directors Guild is the successor to several organizations, the earliest formed in 1924 in Hollywood. The Guild is both a professional society and a labor organization, recognized as IATSE Local 800. The title is misleading. There aren't any "secrets" here - in fact, some of the "secrets" are fundamental knife skills that anyone with a basic interest in cooking already knows: julinene your vegetables (cut them into matchstick-shaped pieces); cube your vegetables; use a melon-baller to make spheres...Other instructions include:- Waffle fries- Make a lattice top for a pie- butter balls- curly fries- quenelles- how to dip fruit in chocolate- how to make a compound butter (butter with seasonings in it)Other ideas include old-school, traditional things like radish roses and tomato roses.I do give them credit for providing clear instructions with step-by-step photos - this would be valuable to those who are just starting out with cooking. The photos of the completed dishes are not gorgeous "food porn" shorts - the food looks like someone made it at home without food stylists or the help of Photoshop. This may be a good or bad thing for the reader depending on their viewpoint - some won't be "wowed" or inspired to make the dish; others may encouraged by looking at the images and thinking, "Oh, I can do that."Aside from the instruction section, the book provides some basic information about place settings, essential equipment, and establishing mood lighting. The final section about edible flowers, shoots, and leaves is the only information you may not find in a basic cookbook.WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE BOOKThis book is about entertaining at home.It would be helpful for someone who wants to host dinners but has no idea where to start. Maybe someone who just graduated from college or someone who has cooked for family and now wants to up their presentation game. Additionally, it is nice to have a variety of techniques collected in one place, even though the techniques are basic. This saves you from having to sift through a couple of cookbooks to get the information you are looking for.However, if you already have a basic cookbook or two (cooking fundamentals and baking/dessert fundamentals), you are better off sticking with these and looking for inspiration on the Net.I'm giving the book two stars because the title is misleading - there aren't any secrets here. If they had named the book "Knife cuts, Garnishing and Plating 101" I'd give it 3.5 stars.

My husband is a chef and I bought this for his use and for me to learn more about food presentation. The book's techniques for decoration and the illustrations are very good and helpful. They provide a lot of information and helped me imagine more and better ways to present the food. I would have rated this book higher but the recipes that are provided are wrong in many cases .We first noticed a problem when we were making the fruit in jelly dessert on page 101. My husband said it looked like it called for too much gelatin for the amount of liquid. He did some calculations on the quantities and was sure this was the case. We went ahead and followed the recipe to the letter and the jelly turned out extremely hard. Even cutting the amount of gelatin to half was still too much.We then made the tuile paste from page 162. When we baked it it turned into a runny, unusable mess. My husband then started going through several of the recipes and noticed more errors. For example, on page 164 the red bell pepper sauce recomends running it through a sieve withou mentioning the need to puree the ingredients first.I am lucky to have a professional chef in the house otherwise I would have been very frustrated trying to make the recipes and having them turn out "wrong" when in reality it is the book that has the errors.The book is still very useful but if you are not very experienced in the kitchen the errors may prove difficult to identify and overcome.

I really enjoy this book because it teaches how to think more critically about plating, and gives ideas that can be applied across a wide spectrum instead of being specific to one dish. This book doesn't just tell you how to make a Parmesan basket or a candied lemon peel, it helps you think critically about why you should add them to your meal, what kind of compliment/contrast they provide to dish, how to create your the table setting, plate, and lighting choices, and so much more.My favorite thing overall though is an illustrated "table of contents" section towards the beginning so you can thumb through designs and then flip to the page you want once you find something you like. You don't have to read the book cover to cover; jump around to what suits you. There's a nifty time and difficulty identification at the top of each one so you know exactly what you're getting into.Overall, if you want to step your food game up, I highly recommend this book.

When I bought this book, I was hoping for more theory and concepts on how to make food look great, with some examples to back up the concepts. It was the reverse: It had a TON of examples (which are beautiful by the way), but very little theory. I felt a bit misled buying the book, but I'm sure other people might prefer how it was done.Pros:TONS of picturesTONS of examples and techniquesCons:The book is kind of small, which makes the gorgeous images small.Not much theory on presentationThe organization of the book could be better.

I just bought a wonderful knife fromZELITE INFINITY Chefs Knife 8 inch - Best... and this book, along with the knife, has me ready to cut up everything in my Garde Manger class. The pictures and the directions are , all, wonderful. This is the modern book that I've been looking for.

I purchased this book as a gift so I can't comment on the recipes. I agree with other reviews that commented on the pictures. There are good ideas, but the book is definitely lacking in making such small pictures. Very difficult to appreciate the presentations with the tiny pictures.
